My Family Story About The Triumph of Our New PM

Tony Abbott was sworn in as Prime Minister of Australia by the Governor General, Quentin Bryce at Government House in Canberra today.

“I, Anthony John Abbott, do swear that I will well and truly serve the people of Australia,” he said, as his proud family looked on. Mr Abbott swore on a bible: “I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Queen Elizabeth the second, the Queen of Australia.”

While his family, consisting of his wife, Margie, daughters Louise, Bridget and Frances, parents Dick and Fay, and sisters Christine and Pippa clapped, Tony Abbott was congratulated by the Governor General.



Tony Abbott kissed his beautiful wife Margie after he was sworn in as Australia’s 28th Prime Minister, while his proud Mother, Fay and Quentin Bryce smiled broadly!

I am particularly happy about Tony becoming Prime Minister because my family have been close friends with the Abbott family for well over 40 years!

We have watched him grow from a boy at school, through Sydney University, become a Rhodes Scholar, (we gave him a farewell party when he left for the United Kingdom), become a Federal MP, (I live in his electorate!), Health Minister for Australia, Leader of the Opposition and now Prime Minister of Australia!

We have seen the Abbott family numerous times over the years and enjoyed their company. Until three years ago, our families have enjoyed each year, for about 18 years, a Christmas party at Tony’s parents home, where Tony often dressed up as Santa, came over the roof and handed out the presents to all the happy children and grandchildren of about eight to ten families. This was one of the highlights of Christmas for all of my siblings with their children and my Mother, and I attended all of them with my boys! It was a great way for us all to keep in touch over the years and we were always warmly welcomed, especially by his parents Fay and Dick. The Abbott family are truly one of a kind and I know Tony’s parents are incredibly proud of their son, and all of their family!

Surrounded by the women in his life are daughters Frances and Louise, wife Margie, Tony, daughter Bridget, sister Christine, parents Dick and Fay and sister Pippa. Tony’s sister Jane was not in attendance.

Throughout his time as Leader of the Opposition, Tony has kept his dignity while enduring the worst slandering, name calling and constant abuse that this country has ever seen, yet he has triumphed throughout it all with great humility!

In case you did not know, over the years Tony Abbott has served with the volunteer Rural Fire Services fighting bush fires, and volunteer Life Saving on our beaches. He also has lived with our indigenous people for a few weeks each year! He plans to continue with this as much as he can, even as Prime Minister! A real leader who gets in and helps out, with real family values, one who mixes with the common man!

Well done Tony! An inspiration for us all!

Congratulations Tony Abbott. I know you will serve Australia well. You and Margie will be wonderful representatives for our great country!
